From my heart to yours: Don’t Delay estate planning
I recently chatted with a client who was devastated to learn about a friend’s diagnosis in her family. Her mother is battling metastatic breast cancer and barely hanging on. Her daughter is now trying to prepare for the worst, but unfortunately there is no plan in place. Incidentally, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My heart turned toward them and with my experience in estate planning, I couldn't help but empathize with the pain and frustration.
It's a common misconception that estate planning is only for the wealthy or the elderly. The truth is, it's an imperative tool for everyone, regardless of age or financial situation. Devastation happens, usually when we least expect it. Preparing an estate provides peace of mind for both you and your family, knowing that your last wishes will be executed seamlessly by your loved ones.
What is an estate plan?
An estate plan is a comprehensive legal plan that encompasses both your living will (healthcare directives), as well as the distribution of your materials and assets.
Why is an estate plan so important?
Ensures your desires in the unexpected: Should you become incapacitated, an estate plan outlines your desired healthcare and medical directives. It also designates who you trust to make decisions on your behalf, also known as Power of Attorney.
Protects your loved ones: A well-crafted estate plan gives you control of how your assets and medical decisions will be enacted, preventing family disputes and costly legal stress.
Provides for your beneficiaries: If you have minor children, estate planning allows you to appoint a trusted guardian to care for them in the event of your passing. Additionally, it ensures a financial plan and security for beneficiaries of any age.
Minimizes taxes: Proper estate planning can help reduce the amount of taxes your beneficiaries will have to pay upon your death.
Don't delay.
Life is busy, and no one wants to spend time in the unthinkable. It’s easy to avoid creating a plan, but the consequences of procrastination can be harsh on your legacy and your family. A qualified estate planning attorney can help you create a plan that reflects your unique circumstances and provides security for you and those after you.
